What is World Contraception Day? – World Contraception Day kicks off on 26 September, a worldwide campaign with a vision for a world where every pregnancy is wanted. Its mission is to improve awareness of contraception to enable young people to make informed decisions on sexual and reproductive health.

This year the campaign is “Your Life, Your Voice: Talk Contraception” to encourage young people to talk about sex and contraception so they have all the information they need to prevent an unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection (STI).

If you are thinking about having sex but are not sure where to go for further information about contraception, talk to people you trust who will be able to give you advice. Don’t be afraid of talking to your boyfriend or girlfriend about contraception before having sex. Remember, it is the responsibility of both partners to think about contraception!

Your Life, Your Voice Pledge - 

“Your Life, Your Voice” is an invitation for you to openly talk about sexual health and contraception. The truth is, talking about contraception can be awkward, but not as awkward as telling your partner that you’re pregnant. Talking about it helps to prevent unplanned pregnancies, and more importantly keeps you protected from STDs.

Here are some simple tips to help you along:

• Practice smart sex: Be prepared to talk about sex with your partner. If you feel uncomfortable talking about it openly, perhaps you need to ask yourself if you are ready for this. Remember that talking about it and setting personal boundaries early is important for both parties.
• Don’t let peer pressure get you: Just because everyone is doing it doesn’t mean you are obliged to follow. You have the right to say no, if your partner pressures you to have sex.
• Don’t abuse alcohol or drugs if you think things could get physical: Contrary to popular belief, alcohol and drugs not only increase the risk of unplanned sex, but also reduce sexual pleasure at the end of the day.
• Preventive measures are essential: The best way to prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies is to practice good birth control. If your partner refuses to respect your decision to use contraception, it is time to re-look at the relationship to see if the risk is worth it.
• Watch out for each other: Bring 2-3 close friends when you go to a bar or a party and watch out for one another. Having a friend whom you trust can prevent you from making unnecessary mistakes.
• Respect one another: It is really important for you and your partner to honour each other’s views in sexual intimacy. This means not forcing the other party to have sex when they are not ready for it.
• Always be prepared: It is important to always have extra condoms with you. In the event of condom failure, emergency contraception can prevent pregnancy if taken early after unprotected intercourse.
• No sex doesn’t mean less affection: Sex should not be glorified as the ultimate form of showing intimacy. There are many ways to show affection beyond sexual intercourse. Discuss with your partner on what alternatives works best for the two of you.
• Make sexual health your priority: Be responsible. If you are sexually active, make it a priority to get regular check ups to monitor their sexual health.
