After a very successful concert here in Singapore in April 2008, Mando-pop singer David Tao will be returning to stage the Singapore leg of his current concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Jan 8, 2010.
Although the popular Taiwanese pop/rock star is reluctant to confirm it, he will probably be taking a long break from recording and performing for the next few years. He is planning to devote his time and efforts into movie making, which is something he has been longing to do for sometime.
Planned in conjunction with the release of his new album, Opus 69 (he was born in 1969), the show this time has a very strong retro flavor to it. The title ‘DT in Space’ ironically, does not mean that it will be a futuristic setting. It actually refers to the most significant event that happened in 1969 – man’s landing on the moon.
From this starting point, David takes his audience on a journey of music. Besides singing most of his top hits like ‘Ai Hen Jian Dan’ and ‘Pu Tong Peng You’, he will also be singing many English songs from the 70’s and 80’s, citing them as songs that strongly influenced his songwriting and musical style. The highlight of this portion has to be his rendition of ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’ with the soulful riffs of Singapore’s top keyboardist/pianist Goh Kheng Long on the Hammond organ. Another song to savour will be Hotel California. Watch out for a surprise – David Tao plays a mean electric guitar. He is even doing a Santana number and his skills will blow the audience away and rock the house.
Unlike teen idols who need lots of packaging, David Tao is a real singer/composer/musician. He does not need fancy dancers or lavish stage effects to impress. Backed by a brilliant four piece band led by the aforementioned Goh Kheng Long, the concert is brilliant in its simplicity and high level of musicianship. David is also very particular about the quality of the sound and works hard with the technical team to deliver a concert does justice to his silky vocals and the band’s quality.
As the theme is retro, the stage is designed to be like a living room of a 70’s house. Furnishings and props include an old black and white tv, vintage 70’s style leather sofas, and an old gramophone. Even the floor is laid with parquet wood to complete the in-house look.
One enjoyable feature of David Tao’s concerts is his straight talking. He is definitely not a highly packaged teen idol who says only what his manager tells him. Candid and humorous, he gives insights into how he came to write some of his most popular hits, his relationship with his famous father and rumors about his love life.
This concert series kicked-off in Taiwan on October 16 (5 shows) and has now moved onto various cities in China. At almost 3 hrs in length and displaying a full range of David Tao’s singing, music and performing skills, it promises to be better than all his previous efforts and will leave the audience wanting more.
